Arne & Elisabeth Garvi left Norway and Sweden in 1986. With their three children, they drove through Europe, past Gibraltar and continued through the Sahara-desert until they reached Niger, where they settled.

I had just turned six and was full of expectations, but we were still in the desert and could not really understand how anything less anyone could grow/live in this arid land. Our major concern at the time however was keeping the carton boxes (in which our stuff was packed) safe, so that when we arrived our final destination (Zinder), we’d be able to build that Barbie doll house we’d been discussing for weeks on end.
