When I was walking home from work yesterday, Jamila & Aichatu, two of my little friends on Eden Street, came up to me and asked me if I could please take a picture of them. Of course, I couldn’t resist them, but as soon as I got out the camera, the smiles disappeared - as it culturally correct in Niger to look serious on picture. Here’s a quick recap of how our photoshoot session went:
Esther: “Great guys, now show me some happiness!”

Esther: “That’s it, Aichatu! But Mila, you still look sad!”
Jamila [giggles]: “She really wants us to smile on pictures!”
Jamily [whispering]: “Isn’t that weird…?”
Aichatu [nods in agreement but does not mind]: U-huh!
In the end, my favorite picture was the first shot I took!

how are you Esther
Ha, vad roligt att man inte ska le på kort Niger! Precis tvärt emot USA då, för där har ju alla ett superbrett leende på alla kort. Och jag tycker nog allt det är roligare med folk som ler.
Kramis!
@Niger: Yes, aren’t they beautiful?
@Karin: I agree with you that I prefer pictures of people smiling, but that’s because I want a picture that shows people just as cheerful as they are in real life!
Hi Ishtar
I am so used to reading your posts - I am happy you write a lot! Yes beautiful kids
@Szavanna: Glad you enjoy it! Lol, there is so much to tell about Niger that I have to restrain myself from blogging more than one or two posts per day…
Enjoying your blog! Early 20th century in Sweden you were not supposed to smile when your picture was taken either. It is hard to find a photo of my great grandmother (1909-2004) with a smile on her lips…
[…] have too many lovely neighbours for me not to share! This is Mina, the younger sister of Jamila, whom I took pictures of together with her friend Aichatu. These pictures were taken by Anette […]
