Births are important events in Niger. The celebration that occurs on the seventh day after the birth of a baby (also known as a “souna”) reflects the joy that every newborn child brings. Sounas are one of the four major social highlights in Niger (next to Tabaski, Ramadan and marriages). As I was working that day, I went (together with my neighbour Jmackie) in the morning.

Ali’s eldest daughter Uma (who married last year and who is expecting herself) with his youngest daughter Aida!

Seven day old Aida with her mother in the background. She takes after her older brother Mutari, but I know from experience that looks change, so in a year’s time, she might very well be a copy of her father instead!

Salamatu Ali, dressed up for the souna, and looking very good after just having given birth!

Jmackie - my neighbour! We worked those fans quite well I must say…

Ali takes a picture of Jmackie and I with Salamatu & Aida - and then, as he was just about to take another one, the camera ran out of batteries! But Aida had a great day anyway!
