This weekend, I rode out with Koro & Gill and three mares for a real long ride in the bush. It was amazing, despite the heat, and despite her belly which is having Zinder in general pretty concerned by now, Arwen set the pace and it was not particularly “slow-slow”…
After the ride, Maya stayed the day socializing with the other two, and this time, there was no fighting, even between Arwen & Maya.
Although Sahara and Arwen are on friendly terms, it’s nothing like the bond between Sahara and her half-sister Maya! They’re both vocal and seem to think alike, and having Maya over always makes Sahara a more satisfied horse.
She was thrilled to have her “lost” flock member back…
…but she got so used to it, that during the night, she kept calling out to Maya (who probably hears her, as she lives only a block away), so I had a busy night waking up to different varities of horse screams… But it was worth it, seeing how much they all enjoyed themselves during the day!

I know my grand pa used to feed them with millets
Well Maya is fed by the family that she is staying with, but as for Anette’s Sahara and my Arwen, we feed them 1 tiya of sorghum & 1 tiya of shaft in the mornings, and ½ tiya of beans (wake) & 1 tiya of shaft in the afternoons. The trick however is for them to have unlimited access to hay, which they do. I buy the cheaper version (”cow hay” instead of “horse hay”) and as you can see from the looks of the horses, it works really well! It is common here is Zinder too to give the horses millet, but sorghum (which is cheaper) works better for me as the horses chew it before swallowing and therefor digests it better.
Those fly masks make the horses look so exotic - like princesses. It always makes me sad when horses call to each other, but I have to remind myself that usually they’re just talking- like “Hey, where did you go? When will you be back?” - even though it sounds so urgent and stressed out.
@Victoria: I love the fly masks too, they’re both pretty and VERY useful! I hate having flies in my eyes and so do the horses… The separation anxiety is hard to listen to (Arwen & Sahara do that whenever they’re left behind…) but when they’re still together with another horse and call out for a third one, it’s way cooler and kind of fun to listen to. Unless you’re sleeping outside on the veranda (20 meters away) and it’s 4 am in the morning - and you intend to be fit for fight at work the next day…
