Can anyone tell me what this is?
It crept out of the shower and hid under my blue bathroom bucket… Never seen one before and hope I never have to again either! It was… creepy!

a yahoo search with “centipede” delivered the following:

Enjoy!
Wow, Jerome, seems this guy has relatives all over the world!!!
That is a centipede. Beware! The bite is VERY painful.
I would concur with Tauratinzwe’s posting. Beware those critters! Would one of these tread on you, they’d leave an itchy track the like of a jellyfish sting. Although, either (the alkaline property of) peeing on the sore or applying a concoction of centipede pickled in akvavit will bring relief. By the way, squashed scorpion pickled in akvavit works best on scorpion stings. Although I’d surmise that strategically scattered servings of caustic (Nigerien captain-based) lutefisk will keep the critters at bay just fine.
They tell me at Danja it is a “shashanu” (or shaishanu or shashalu). I’d agree that it is a centipede and my guard replied “Akwai zahi”, so their bite or sting is painful.
I will have nightmares tonight.
omg, ok, run Esther, get a shoe to kill it or something… bleh!
Ai ai… Den så ikke god ut.. Kom på besøk til madagaskar… mindre farlige krypdyr der…

Well , i used to see them in Niger, they like humidity
I think they call them 1000 pattes they are not too dangerous
Thanks for the all info guys, and sorry for causing any potential nightmares, lol! Won’t be blogging about any more centipedes for a while, for our house is actually pretty bug free… But sometimes they manage to get past the security system and I have to go and get the insecticide…
Yikes!!! that is so creeepy!! Hope it did not harm you??
Cannot enter our bathroom now without thinking about this post, LOL. Hoping we don’t see them in Niamey…
@Childwoman: No, it didn’t harm me - I just dosed it off with insecticide and killed it off…
@5nomads: If it’s any consolation, during the twenty-something years I’ve spent in Niger, this was my first encounter with it!
