So how was warm season in Niger spent 20 year ago? I was looking through my mother’s image archives the other day and found lots of reminders, all from the month of May 1988.
As always, May was excessively dusty - and we found we could write things in the dust coat on the veranda table. ‘Damm’ is Swedish for dust, if anyone is wondering.
I don’t remember minding the heat however, as there was water that year (contrary to the year before). As you can imagine, a lot of time was spent hanging out in the family pool…
The greengrocer brought pink bananas - still my favourites!
Reading French cartoons on the veranda (haven’t done that in a long time!)
I also went to school looking like this…
My sister celebrated her birthday-
…and one of the things I remember - as I am reminded of by this picture - is being immensely jealous of her new Barbie dolls!
Things ended cheerfully as we went out to eat in the evening,
…and I had my favourite meal at the time: Spaghetti carbonara!

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackAH! The red bananas. I haven’t seen any of those since I left Tanzania donkey’s years ago. They were so sweet. I never saw them in Zimbabwe or Moçambique.
We had some bananas in Moçambique that stayed green even when ripe. You had to wiggle them and when they got easy to wiggle, they were ready to eat.
My favorite bananas are the short tart ones we call apple bananas in Hawaii.
If you see any red bananas soon, enjoy one for me.
Men, vilka söta bilder!!
Love the photos!
My gosh that’s a lot of dust!!
@Tauratinzwe: The “ordinary” bananas are ripe when green, and I have this thing about not wanting yellow bananas… Even when I go to Sweden, I want them green around the edges! Haven’t had pink bananas since October-December 2007 but I’ll make sure to enjoy them when I see them again.
@Karin: Thanks!
@DM: Yup, that is a lot of dust, and let me tell you, there’s no less dust in Zinder today twenty years later!! My house looks like that after a bad storm…
20 years growing up in Niger wow
I have no pictures left of it,
I do remember a trip in Zinder in Air Niger at my aunt house for the summer, my uncle passed away
My aunt I wonder what happened to her, i need to offer her a gift
I would love to visit Zinder again
Your pictures made me laugh out loud. I love these kinds of wacky family photos!
Love your “Kalle Anka” cap when going to school (what fashion it was!), and your, uh, obviously jealous expression about the Barbie dolls. Thanks for sharing.
