Last Saturday, my sister, my sister-in-law and I decided it was time to check out the fabrics at the Zinder market. Tabita wanted to come along, making it her first visit ever to the marketplace of Zinder, something she was pretty keen on!
The weather was beautiful that morning as it had rained all night. Rainy season in Niger may not be the most comfortable of seasons (it’s very humid…) but it sure is beautiful and the colours are breathtaking!
As the car wasn’t feeling all that well, we took our bikes, which was even better because we got to enjoy the scenery even more!
The marketplace was busy as usual, with some heavy clouds hanging over us.
Tabita was a bit reserved at first (so many people!) but it was an adventure and we found lots of tissues.
Because it was so long since I was there last, I found lots of interesting new fabrics. Will blog more about the end results later!

Wow, the fabrics are beautiful! I have bought some from Ghana in the past (I have a friend that was living there)but there are so many beautiful ones, I can imagine it is difficult to choose.
You are riding bikes what ever happened to the horses
@Pat: Ah, I’ve been asked that before, and to be frank, I don’t know the exact answer. I have studied on university level (but I chose distant courses so I could stay and work in Niger at the same time), but I’ve always liked English - it’s a rich language. And a very international one too…
@Janet: Yes, it IS hard to chose, so I go every second month and buy everything that I really like. Fabrics can be saved for ages, and I love having things at hand - so that when that moment comes when I need to make a dress for a wedding or such, I don’t have to go fabric hunting first. However, some fabrics will be absolutely wonderful at the market, but you have to think twice so you don’t buy something too colorful that you end up not wearing.
@Niger: There’s no point saddling up to head into the city, as there is so much traffic. Horses in Niger don’t have shoes (which they would need if I made it a habit to ride through town) but the bush is perfect for them!
