The boabab forest looks magical! Had you not posted pictures of a boabab forest, I would have never known what it looked like. Cool. So many trees and still no grass beneath it! Magical!

And here I was, opting for the reb-billed hornbill! Mononoke, you say? That will make a good horse-name suggestion for my lovely little niece who receives a fair princess with a duplo pony from her adoring aunts, and then asks me what the horse should be called... Now I have an answer, next time! :-)

Much obliged to find myself sought out on a matter of Nigerien bird-watching. And, nevertheless, utterly stumped by your query, I first intended posting to admit just that.

But never one to shy away from an internet search when challenged by a fair princess from the Nigerien branch of the illustrious Garvi clan(*), I opted for taking up the gauntlet.

That critter is a Tockus Nasutus.
Also known as Calao à Bec Noir
http://www.oiseaux.net/oiseaux/calao.a.bec.noir.html
And no. Not your plain Black-Billed Hornbill. But - why? go figure - African Grey Hornbill.
http://www.answers.com/topic/african-grey-hornbill

Now, how is it called in haussa or zarma? I don't know.

Kudos to you for today's pics. And, make a note of bringing that DVD of Princess Mononoke back for Tabita.

(*)note to delf: with these Africans, who knows, better play it safe and lay it thick)

@Tauratinzwe: Well, at first look, it may pass for a red-billed hornbill http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-billed_Hornbill but there are so many to choose from! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bucerotidae

@Karin: Of course I will bring you to the Baobab forest when you come to see me! It's one of my favourite 10 places in Niger and a must when it comes to showing off the country! :-)

It's definitely a hornbill. Which variety, I can't say. [Truly I CAN'T say. It's impossible since I don't know.;-)]
