Today is Anette’s birthday, and so what better than to post some Isolde highlights from her first week in life? Here is a post for all horse-lovers!
DAY ZERO: Arwen hasn’t more than come back from her afternoon walk when she starts foaling. Ali heads out to inform Anette, who arrives 12 minutes later to a very calm mare and a newly delivered baby foal! When you look at all that comes out of a mare, you just can’t understand how it all fit in her belly!
Learning to stand wasn’t easy, but Isolde kept trying until she got it right (taking little naps in between).
3 hours after birth when all is well, Isolde had eaten and Arwen was free from her heavy placenta.
DAY ONE: The first day of real life and all is well. Isolde is eating well and Arwen is performing marvelously as a first-time mother! I couldn’t be prouder of Arwen, but you all know how fond I am of my darling horse!
Walking is no problem (for most part, at least)…
… and Isolde is discovering a love for humans!
Arwen of course is quick to supervise things, but Anette gets green light (not many others do…).
Dennis is amongst the few animals allowed to approach, but ever since Isolde’s birth, he’s been busy protecting the couple and not showing any hunting instincts at all.
Isolde then works on rolling around in the ground,
…but such hard work quickly calls for some serious resting!
And who can be expected to run around all day long on your first day in life?
DAY TWO: After a 24 hour long seclusion from the rest of “the flock”, Arwen remembers Sahara and goes to greet her, making sure however that Isolde keeps behind her. Sahara is very keen on getting to know Isolde but it will take a couple of days before Arwen relaxes enough for Isolde to get to meet the dominant mare on her own. Which results in some serious Sahara-grunting and Isolde running for cover behind her mother’s back!
Dennis Mugu however has great plans for the two: finally an animal his size! And a female too!
DAY THREE sees Isolde in full discovery mode and gives her mother a hard time trying to keep her out of harm’s way.
When galloping, Isolde discovers a new charm in life: SPEED! Talk about being her mother’s daughter!
Dennis works on his charms and Isolde accepts him!
Soon the two of them are best friends! (my favourite picture in this post, just because the two of them seem so happy)
Every activity requires its own pit-stop!
…before the little filly can decide what to do next!
Which was to go and scratch her head against Anette’s leg. A minute later, Arwen arrived on the other side and did the same. Like mother, like daughter!
DAY FOUR sees mother and filly having a lazy day in the sun (I don’t know what it is about our horses, but they all love to sunbathe!) and Anette is thrilled to have a quiet photo op with the lovely newcomer.
Mmmm, lovely sunshine… At least she’s got something from me too!
Isolde looking like a camel.
Watch out for Arwen when she rolls around! Her belly is still huge…
That’s it for the first week of Isolde’s life. In two weeks I get to see her, but in the mean time, I’m glad Anette gets to enjoy her!!!

Hi, Esther and thank you!
I have a lot to tell you about Isolde and what have happen this weekend. She is a real “Tok Fia”! It’s not easy to take pictures on her when she is now walking or galloping after me. We have become real good fiends…
Talk to you later!
Anette
First of all: happy birthday to Anette!
The horses look great! Isolde has filled out so much already. A very healthy baby. I love the way she and Dennis play together. She is way too cute! I can’t wait for you to get back and get your hands on that beautiful baby. Anette has done such a great job but I know you can hardly stand being away.
Theresa
Men vad söt!!! Jag vill också ha en bäbishäst i trädgården!!!
Ishtar translation: What a cutie! I also want to have a baby horse in the garden!!!
Esther…thank you for your comment! My husband is 100% Swedish and I am 50% (used to be an Olson). What an interesting journal. I can’t wait to learn more about you and your mission. How did you get there in the first place?
Lori Skoog
@Karin: Isn’t she??? I’m starting to wonder who I lived without a baby cutie in the garden all these years! But then again, in the beginning, it was enough just having Arwen there…
@Lori: I didn’t know you had so much Swedish heritage! That’s cool! How I got here in the first place is a long story, and best described in the About Eden page:

Hi Esther!
I followed the comment link from the Virtual Tea House that you made–about the 30th anniversary of my mother’s death…back here to your site, and lo and behold…there’s Isolde in all her new found glory! Wow…
I love what you are being with your life (started to write ‘doing’ but knew that that is not the right word!). I’m very interested in the Eden Foundation. Is there a way to make a small on-going donation (the link only looks like it’s a one time donation).
Thank you again for your comment on the Virtual Tea House. My prayer for you is peace as you go through this first cycle of the sun without your mother’s physical presence.

Greetings - Esther,
Your site is incredible, and your Eden Foundation sounds tremendous. I love that your wonderful family has found a way to contribute in a way that is sustainable and uplifting. I am so impressed! Isolde is beautiful.
Oh what a delight, your little Isolde! I bet you can’t wait to be there in person with her. Such live comes in those little newborn packages. Thank you for alerting me to her arrival. How time flies — I remember when you were — allowing?? — her to be bred? *g*
Congratulations! Isolde is darling, and Arwen seems to be a good mama. It’s great that Anette is handling her a lot when she’s small. We put a halter on Siete the day after she was born and got her used to being brushed and touched. She learned to trust people and it really helped when she grew up. I’ll bet you can’t wait to see her- a new foal is the incarnation of “joy”.
@LJB: Isn’t she lovely? I must be the proudest foal-owner there is right now! Or everyone else feels equally fortunate! Time certainly has flown, although Sahara (Anette’s horse) who was the one “allowed to breed”
is due in late January. But still! Two years have passed since we first tried to have a foal with Arwen, and so I’m am so glad for Isolde!!
@Victoria: Thank you!!! Like I just told LJB, I’m overly proud right now
Anette tried to put a halter on Isolde, but even though it was a foal-sized halter, it just fell off! Too big… She’ll simply have to grow a bit, but in the meantime, she gets lots of cuddles from the humans around her, whom she loves so much she leaps into their laps! She even loves the dog Dennis Mugu, lol! To his credit, he loves her, and has not been seen thinking of her as food yet!
Oh my gosh!!! So exciting!! I love her…she is just beautiful. Amazing photos of the birth…Arwen made it look easy:-) Congrats Auntie:-) I just watched a natural horsemanship dvd working with foals…it made me cry to see the possibilities and the relationship we can have with our horses. I look forward to watching Isolde grow up. Can I be a godmother?:-) So cool Ishtar…just a fantastic.
