Since giving birth to her firstborn Kalahari, Sahara has been quite tired. For in contrast to other mares, Sahara does not only have one baby to feel responsible for, but two!
The young ones of Ishtar’s Ark: Isolde (4 months) and Kalahari (2 weeks)
In true African spirit, the two adults of our small herd of barb horses share the responsibility of raising the young ones, but their take on foal discipline is very different. Arwen is quite the laid-back Scandinavian mother who has yet to put her foot down concerning anything that regards her darling daughter. Sahara on the other hand believes in firmly voiced rules, supported by constant supervision and protection. For the whole pack. No wonder she is exhausted!
Isolde does not mind having two mothers, and as far as she is concerned, she and Kalahari are blood sisters.
Here they are in simultaneous “shrimp position”. Did anyone mention a four month age gap? Ha! Not in Isolde’s world at least!

“Oh, is it photoshooting time again?”
Hope you are all enjoying your weekend!

Be well my smiling bright one!
Could things get any sweeter?
These little horses look so secure and happy. It’s a joy to come visit you. How interesting that Sahara and Arwen have different parenting styles. Silk is still very protective of Siete when they are part of a herd of horses. I think some mothers are just more like that than others.
I agree that the two fillies are adorable.
I was wondering how you trim their hooves? Do you trim them? Is the sand enough to wear them down or do you have a farrier?
Esther, It seems like such a gift to live with your herd. These little ones, all of your little ones, show such confidence in their world.

I always enjoy my weekends when I have the photos of and commentary on your animals to absorb! Ishtar’s Ark animals are all so beautiful.
Hello! Thanks for visiting my blog today and commenting about my goats. I had a great time visiting your blog today! I especially loved the posts about Allis. She is adorable! I have never been to Niger but I visited Gambia and Senegal in the late 1980s and it was a wonderful and insightful trip, although the weather was excruciatingly hot some days. You are doing some wonderful things. I will look forward to visiting your blog again!
Esther: Fun shots of the two horses resting.
I love the shots of Isolde and Kalahari together. It will be so nice that they will have each other to play with!
