Just about a month and a half, I entered Sheba in a dog photo contest held at Out and About with your Dog. Having never had a dog who enjoyed toys as much as Sheba, and seeing that the prize was a toy, I just had to take a minute and sum up some of my reasons for being so grateful for Sheba and all the life quality she was adding to my life. The winner was announced a few days later, and luckily for our toy-adoring Rhodesian ridgeback, she was the one!
The package arrived a few days ago, which was pretty impressive seeing that packages in these parts of the world can take more than a year to reach its final destination… Sheba did not need any explaining after having been told that the package was for her (after all, Rhodesian ridgebacks seem to be born with an intuitive feel of what they’re worth!) and set about to open it with surprising skill.
The first item was a beautiful red bandana, that fit her perfectly!
After we had helped her put it on, she got back to her package.
Something was smelling in there!!
At this point, she got a little help from us humans, but as you can all tell from the picture above, Sheba in her mind had everything under control, did not see the need for such interruption.
“Uhm, excuse me Esther, but I believe that is my toy!”
The second item was a strawberry flavoured toy which Sheba instantly fell in love with.
Shaking and tasting it all over the veranda!
At this point, human interaction was welcome again, as Sheba wanted a counter-pulling partner.
“OK, Esther, uhm, please PULL!”
“Well, maybe not that much, ok?”
“Uhm, is that toy coming back to me, or what?”
“Now THIS is more like it!”
And so Sheba - who is officially nine months (!) old today - quickly settled down with her strawberry flavoured toy, and fell asleep with it!
Happy 9 months, gorgeous girl! I can’t believe how big you’ve grown!!

Woohoo Sheba’s RR supremacy has the recognition she deserves. Your photo’s are just wonderful Esther, they really made me smile to see such joy.
I’m not a bit surprised that she won the photo contest. She’s so photogenic, and you take great pictures of her.
Lovely kerchief, and Daisy is jealous of that strawberry flavored toy!
What can I say, Sheba ROCKS!!!
adorable post
she totally looks so good in red :))
No question about it….she could get a modeling job. You have done a great job showing her off to the world. By the way, red could be her color.
I just love Sheba’s expressive face! Those pics with her ears flying up are priceless. Congratulations Sheba!!
You go girl! Sheba is sure enjoying her new goodies! She looks mighty stylin’ in her kerchief!
Congrats Sheba!!! Of course you won, every picture of your gorgeous self is great! A strawberry flavored toy sounds great too! Enjoy!
Nala
Congrats to Sheba!
She IS Gorgeous!
I never heard about Rhodesian Ridgeback before this blog. But last night I saw a terrifying BBC documentary on pedigree dogs. They put down puppies that are born without a ridge:(
Bravos to Sheba !
Red seems to be the colour of the spring´s dog fashion. Happy playing!
Congratulations Sheba!
Tabita: “But mum, Sheba is still a small baby dog he, like that one there (very small type of dog somewhat bigger than a cat….).”
Mum: “Well, I think Sheba has become a lot lot bigger now……..you know she still grows…”
Esther, Tabita will be greatly surprised by Sheba’s size when we are back in June!! Sheba is certainly still in the mind of our Tabita!
I found your blog from Nala’s. Sheba is a beautiful dog and looks wonderful in those photos. We had one too as a family dog for some years.
I admire your parents philanthropical vision and dedication, I will come back to read more about the work of EF.
Yes, indeed, Sheba deserves the prize for Miss February…she is one gorgeous doggy! On top of that, she has a wonderful personality. I agree with Ed — Sheba ROCKS!
Congrats on winning their contest! She deserved to win! That toy seemed to have made her day, and she looks great in red. Has she destroyed it yet?
Congrats to Sheba! Bandit has 2 of those rope bones and will spend hours dropping in your lap so you can throw it over and over for him.
Congratulations, Miss Sheba! What a healthy, happy, stunning girl you are! You deserve to win every prize known to caninekind. Keep growing and going!
Congratulations Sheba! What a beautiful girl you are in that red kerchief. Angie says she’ll come and play “pull” with you - she has lots of practise with her rope toy. Well DONE!!!!!!!! Hugs
Aw, you guys are all too sweet! Sheba sends her love!
@Lori: Just was I was thinking when I was putting together the post. That third last picture is my favourite, and yes, red is one of her best colours!
@Koala: I learned of this habit when I first heard about the breed and had it confirmed when calling around to some breeders to see if they would be willing to keep a ridgeless RR and allow us to take it to Africa. They were very reluctant about it. Thankfully, the trend has changed in Sweden at least, and today, many RR owners proudly present their ridgeless RRs with as much love as their ridgebacks. IMO, the ridge has nothing to do with psychology, and so those killing off their rigdeless dogs are wasting good dogs. Thankfully, Sheba’s breeders don’t, but keep all their healthy puppies. Sheba’s beautiful aunt Zelma (whose owner also owns Sheba’s sister Heika, a ridgeback) is in fact a ridgeless beauty, but before her owner told me, I hadn’t even thought about it!
@Renate: Lol!
@Kate: Welcome! Nala’s is a great hangout place, that’s for sure! Looking forward to reading your blog too!
@Pat: Aw…
@Lindsay: Nope, despite the lovely strawberry flavour, the rope bone is still intact! Her older one however is coming close to permanent retirement however.
@Tired dog: Aw!
@Jo: Angie is welcome any day!
Congratulations to you and Sheba! Her beauty and charm really come through in these pictures. Wish I could play tug of war with her too.
she’s adorable…and you are quite lucky to have such a great doggirl ^..^
happy birthday sheba…
Congrats Sheba for a big win.
Oh, that scarf is darling on her, perfect color! And a scented toy? Too cool! Sheba, congrats on your win, happy 9 month birthday, and enjoy the toys!
Gratulerer!
They grow fast don’t they? I remember when Tonka fit in the palm of my hand — with room left over! Only took a few hours for that to change though. In the first few days of their lives you can literally watch then grow!
Happy Birthday Sheba!
Wow Esther! This is great. It’s made me cry! I love the pictures and Sheba looks so happy. That package that I wrapped in Brighton has made it to Niger. HOORAH!! Thanks for the post. Fantastic.
