The orange line at the top represents the Sahara desert (which owns 4/5 of the country), the orange circle for the sun that shines so generously on the blue sky. The green line at the bottom stands for the river Niger, which, despite only running through the very Western corner of Niger, is the only constant source of water in the land and has given the country its name.

Well you Garvi you must be lucky to belong to the most environmentaly conscious country because this flag that you see is the one of the least green country
Lovely Esther, thanks for an interesting post of the flag against the blue African sky! Hope you’re over your two mishaps this week and feeling relaxed. Hugs
Thank you for explaining the meaning of the stripes. It’s a distinctive flag with the sun in the middle.
Interesting facts about the flag. I thought it had a star but must mix it up with some another flag. Nice flying colors with douple sun. And gorgeous blues. Happy SWF!
Lovely shot!
Flott fanget bilde tross motlys. Intresant info også. Vi har faktisk spist reker i dag men ikke i badeparken i Drøbak som bildene til swf var tatt. Ha en flott helg, Esther!
Verkligen vacker bild av flaggan och solen som representeras med i kanten.
Thanks for the lesson, they were all things I did not know. No matter where we live it is important for us to be proud of our contries and there flag.
Hi Esther,
Hopefully, I’ll now remember Niger’s flag! Pretty sky. I hope your Land Rover is “better.”
You have the blueist of blue skies! Love the flag blowing in the wind.
Interesting to see the flag and learn what the colors represent.
Great blue sky behind it.
Beautiful sky and flag. Thanks for sharing its meaning. Happy SWF!
So much similar to the Indian flag. We have a blue wheel in the center with 24 spokes, known as Ashoka Chakra.
enjoyed the history of this lovely country which you call home…i so enjoy your blog and wish you a happy weekend.
Nice capture and loved the explanation.
Beautiful photo. It’s nice to catch up with your blog again!
I wonder why they chose green and not blue for the river Niger? Hmm… And I know feel that I have learnt something new today and can spend the rest of my May Day holiday doing nothing righteously.
What a great Skywatch post. I like learning about flags and just love the positive things you say about your chosen country.
Such a great picture, and thank you for the background information! Really cool.

What a glorious post! The flag shows a fantastic piece of land and hope one day it will gain its former glory. I have not seen the flag before. Thanks for sharing.
This is a lovely photo and the explanation really makes it *shine*–I like the transparency of each part of the flag’s fabric.
