With my favourite Chinese restaurant located in Kano (Nigeria), it no more than right that my favourite sushibar should be located right here in Falkenberg (Sweden)!

A few days after arriving, my father, Hanna and I had been shopping at Gekås, and coming back to Falkenberg, my father took us out for dinner. After nine months in a landlocked country, fish was the obvious choice!

Tommy who runs the sushi bar is a very friendly man with an intriguing life story.

He is very careful about the ingredients that he uses and his menu varies with the seasons, which reminds me of Africa. Food is supposed to come in seasons, but in our modern society, availability is often more important the taste, and so quality is compromised. At this sushibar, you will have to enjoy your favourites while they last, and when a particular fish or seafood cannot be aquired fresh anymore, you will simply have to wait until the next season, for Tommy is not one to prepare delicious art with frozen ingredients.

My personal favourite is the avocado-crab rolls, but so with so many varieties to choose from, my favourites may change with the seasons!

This time, there was no tuna, and I’m not sure we had eal either, but we had salmon, shrimps and lots of rolls with avocado…

Starting off with soup

…then adding gari (pickled ginger) and wasabi (japanese horseradish).

My father worked hard to convince Hanna to dip her sushi in the wasabi, which is hot in the typically horseradish mannor, but enhances the taste rather than kills it. He did get her as far as to try it, but she thought it stung too much and I doubt he won her over…

It was a lovely evening, and tonight, my sister, Hanna and I are going back for a second round. Will Hanna try the wasabi again? Only time will tell!

Well it all looks very pretty and delicious. Have to admit, I’m not a big sushi eater. And I agree with Hanna about the Wasabi being a bit to hot. Enjoy dinner.
It looks so good! Here in My Muskoka (2 hours drive north of the city of Toronto) we have a retired Japanese baseball player who opened up a sushi restaurant. We are so grateful!
Another family has bought a bar and has E. Indian food. A nice break from pub food!
Nice post!
Oh that all looks so good! I think that is one of my favorite things about Sweden. There is always some kind of seafood in season there. I’m in the midwestern US and getting truly fresh seafood is rare!
Esther: Looks like you got your feel of rolls for a bit.
I’ve been eating sushi and wasabi as long as I can remember, so I always find it very amusing when people try wasabi for the first time. Those who stick with it eventually love it, so hopefully Hanna does.
That avocado-crab looks amazing. I’ve never had anything like that before…something to suggest to the chefs in my area. Have you ever had halibut? It’s so, so very very good.
That sushi looks delicious! We have a favorite Chinese restaurant with sushi that looks just like that! I love the pickled ginger, too.
I learned the hard way how hot wasabi is! Now I avoid it.
oh man! i want sashimi
Mmm…! now you have me hungry for sushi! It’s been too long, really. Here in this part of the States, Bluefin Tuna (my favorite!) is pretty much available year round. That’s one of the nice things about where I live. Our coast is only about 12 miles from where the warm currents of the Gulf Stream meet the colder currents from the North Atlantic, so if it swims there’s a pretty good chance you can find it here!
Yeah, I definitely have a full-blown sushi jones going now. I’ll have to fix that for sure! (And soon!)
YUM! Looks like a great meal.
I am with Bryan on this - also grew up with the taste of Sashimi & Co. and it just rocks. Hard to convince others though, especially vegans who don’t eat fish and dislike the (in their opinion) fishy taste of Miso soup.
I could eat this almost every day of the week! Nice, thx 4 sharing. Now let me go look for dinner
