After spending a day in Varberg and two on Donsö (an island on the West Coast), I am heading back to the mainland today to meet an old friend.

Frida lives in Gothenburg, which is about an hour’s drive from Falkenberg. We were insperable in middle school and junior high and always find a million things to talk about!

We’ve had some wonderful weather these past two weeks and if we’re lucky, the sun will be shining for another few days, but then I’ve been told that we’re to expect rain.

Last time I visited Frida in Gothenburg was in September.

It was a bit colder but we had a wonderful time!

She lives close to Slottsskogen (lit. The Castle Forest), which is a beautiful 137 hectare park in central Gothenburg and one of my favourite places in this city.

They also have a zpp with Swedish animals. I will have to bring Tabita here one day!

These beautiful critters are Fallow Deer (dovhjort).

The fallow deer originates from Asia Minor, but is now common in large parts of Europe. It was introduced in Sweden as early as the 16th century. A herd-living animal, which can get by with poor grazing. According to the sign in the park, the fallow deer is easier to keep fenced than other deer species (it does not say why, but they looked like very calm creatures!). Maximum weight is 130 kg, maxium height is 110cm. They have a lifespan of nearly 16 years. Not bad?

The Gotland Pony (Gotlandsruss) comes from the island Gotland, is according to the park the oldest Swedish horse breed and dates back to the Stone Age. They are smaller than our barb horses and stand 120-130cm.

One of the elks had given birth and they were indeed a sight to be seen. Elks are so big! It’s one of the most impressive creatures I know!

Last was a visit to the seals, where we stayed for a while, enjoying the action. Seals are amazing to watch but difficult to capture on picture!

What a wonderful and happy post! I love the Scandinavian nature. You must have had a great time together. Thanks for visiting!
Beautiful photos! You and your friend look so happy together! And I think my favourite photo is the one with the tiny bunch of wildflowers! That is very special!
It’s quite the change to see so much green in your photos. Slottsskogen looks like a seriously awesome place… Green forestland with a variety of plant life, water space, and a zoo with fat seals. I almost took a trip to Gothenburg and Stockholm last summer while I was in Europe…now I know I should have!
From all those beautiful pictures it’s easy to see that you girls are having a great time!
Esther…thanks for taking us on another tour. Great photos and beautiful subject matter!
Thanks for the tour! It’s great to meet up with old friends and catch up. Sweden is on my list of places to visit - I have a friend thre who breeds Lipizzaners - so I have an extra reason to go!
Beautiful photos of you and Frida. It’s so nice to keep in touch with old friends. I had to do some calculating on your Gotland pony size. Mischief is about 155 cm at the withers, or 14.1 hands. He’s small for an American Arab. How tall are your Barbs?
I’m preparing a post on our trail tack, probably for this weekend.
Vilken härlig dag ni tycks ha haft. Kul att ni håller kontakten. Bilderna är helt underbara och jag ser du hittade lite lila blommor också
Take care!
Glad you had a good time with your friend. You should do a whole post about those horses. I’d sure be interested.
How nice to visit with a long time friend, take a walk in the woods and go to the zoo. I really like the pics of you two lounging in the flowers. And that dragon looking tree branch is also cool. Great captures. Thanks for keeping us up to date on your adventures.

You both looks so happy! It’s great fun to reunite with old friends.
Um, I’m thinking your Swedish elk look a lot like moose?
Esther: It looks like a great time was had with you and your friend. Those were neat deer and moose photos.
If Sheba were a hoofed animal she’d been an elk.

You are so fortunate to live in two different worlds, and what a contrast those two worlds have—each with its own unique beauty.
It’s great the way you keep in touch with childhood friends.
