This past Wednesday, Isolde turned ten months and today is Kalahari’s turn to turn six.

It’s amazing how fast time flies, and it has been fascinating to watch their journey from timid little fillies to clever young horses!

I am surprised how much they take after their mothers. Kalahari has a timid father but is as dominant as her mother, if not even more. Isolde has a little more say-so horsewise than her mother Arwen, but not much. The order in our flock is very clear: 1# Sahara, 2# Kalahari, 3# Isolde and 4# Arwen.

Although Kalahari can be pushy at times, the interact between her and Isolde is mostly friction free.

Once Kalahari has decided that a place is safe, she heads for adventure, and Isolde follows!

Stretching those beautiful legs!

Oops! Invisible threat blocking the road!

Ready to investigate some more…

I like to bring them young ones into new (safe) situations, just to see what they do, what obstacles they encounter and how they set about solving their problems. On this particular day, Anette and I brought the young horses to the terrain next to the Eden office, which has a lot of space where the horses could stretch their legs.

Running must be a favourite equine activity!

It also offers some amazing shots for the photographer (Anette). I was mostly cheering on the fillies to keep going (who doesn’t love a fanclub?) and giving the dogs Baloo & Sheba a freezone where they did not risk being run over by hardworking barb hooves.

My favourite shot - with Isolde shaking her head in the same way her mother always does when she wants to run past another horse but hasn’t received a green light (by me) to go yet.

By the time Anette and I get back to Sweden, I’m sure we will be shocked by the amount of growth and newfound maturity that the fillies have picked up during our absence. In the meantime, I keep enjoying all my June memories of them and look forward to meeting the four equine Ladies of Ishtar’s Ark.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackHappy days, Isolde and Kalahari! i just LOVE the way Annette captured the headshaking action of Isolde. Kalahari is definitely a leader. I wonder if she’ll surpass Sahara later on… As you know, I’ve learnt so much about horses through your blog and photos and devour your posts with great appetite. Enjoy your beautiful ladies. (((Hugs))) Jo
They are stunning to watch with their running and frolicing. I like the way you hold back the dog in the first shot.
What an enjoyable series of those beautiful horses of yours. The horse language is always very interesting to observe and yes, it is a lot to learn from your pictures and comments!
Grace is action. Such beautiful fillies, well captured on film!! I’m back in the horse world, I guess I just couldn’t stay away!
It’s great to be back reading everyones blogs, I really need to catch up!!
The mother-daughter parallels you explain here are interesting. Is this typical with horses?
By the way, what kind of camera(s) do you and Anette use? I’m currently compiling a list of photoblogs that I like to visit, sorted by camera, and well, I just love this blog.
very interesting!! you make me want to be a horse person. hehe
when i rode a horse for the 2nd time in my life i did definitely notice there are leaders and followers! and pecking orders just like every species! i rode the leader
You take so much pride and joy in these four ladies! And who can blame you! I can hear you wondering behind these comments just what they are like while you are away in Sweden!
Beautiful post!
It’s interesting that the fillies take after their mothers in herd position in spite of their young ages. Does Isolde ever run in the lead?
The girls look beautiful, growing nicely! I love Kalahari’s eyes. They look so large and intelligent. And her coat is so bright!
Great pictures and such gorgeous horses. Bay horses are my favorite. My horse is bay colored.I just love the red coat with black mane and tail and points.
