Our Rhodesian ridgeback Sheba hates toads. She put one in her mouth when she was quite young, and I have never seen her spit for so long afterwards!

They do make great photo objects though. And when the rain water has run off, they hop into the dogs’ water bowls. Smart little creatures.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackA dog with a toad is one of the funniest things that you really can’t justify letting happen — the poor toad shouldn’t be put in such a position. But it’s a real temptation not to step in and prevent it, when you know that the dog is about to experience a harmless bit of complete puzzlement. (And, while most dogs will foolishly attack the next skunk they see in hope of revenge, my experience is that one mouthful of toad is all they ever need as a lesson!)
Esther, our dog, Eddy LOVES frogs and toads and spends hours in the warm season INSIDE the ponds looking for them. She’s never caught one but I’ve often seen them in the dogs’ water.
Sheba and the toad are both smart. Sheba must know you only eat the fried legs. Some toad’s skin gives off poison so Sheba was lucky. Yet how smart of the toad to find the dog dish. Hope they don’t affect the water badly. Nice captures Annette.
I bet that was a sight….Sheba spitting out the froggy.
He’s a cute little guy, but Sheba is smart to stay clear of him, because I’m sure he’s much better to look at than to eat.
