Monday last week saw the end of the Ramadan fasting, and the whole street was celebrating.

The kids were thrilled when they saw that I took out my camera, and wanted to pose with Sheba. Sheba however, my lovely ridgeback girl from Sweden, was not in the best of photo posing modes,

…and I thought the kids looked better without her.

A few seconds down the road, we met Sheba’s longtime friends Adama and Abdul, who were also celebrating. Sheba dived in to greet them, but kept her back to the camera. Talk about (ridgeback) teenage attitude!

Being an ambitious dog owner, I thought we’d gave posing a try nevertheless, for the kids’ sake. It can’t always be about what “we feel like”, right? Sheba sat down as asked but yawned loudly while Aichatu tried to position her younger brother Abdul in place.
Now taking pictures in Niger is serious business. People will often give you their strictest and most official pose, all according to the dominating photo shooting fashion of this part of the world. Anette and I will often start off with a few serious shots and then go for the informal ones.

Sheba however was in no mood for strict official Nigerien photo posing and gave the shot her own twist.
Now that’s what you get for asking a ridgeback to comply when she isn’t in the mood!

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI love the expressions on some of the kids faces - particularly the little girl in a green head wrap and the little boy in camoflage. And as for Sheba…cheeky minx.
Funny last shot of Sheba with her ear and lip flapping. I’ve often had a hard time getting our dogs to cooperate for family photo shoots. Some days are more photogenic than others.
Very cute shots of the kids! They seemed more than happy to cooperate.
Sheba is somebody’s mama now! She can do what she wants! LOL
Esther - What a great post! I love the expressions of the children, but I must say Sheba’s head shake in the last photo takes the prize!
Oh Esther, what a special, precious post. The children are too sweet and Sheba, well, Sheba, throughout, but especially the last photo, just takes the cake! What a darling dog she is. Thanks for sharing this brilliant post. (((Hugs))) Jo
I like the kids poses on the last shot. That looks really “official” looking pose. I remember we had to pose like that when we go to the studio for portraits.
Esther: What a neat walk with your dog, the kids do love it.
Beautiful photos of the children, and that dog…!!
These are wonderful pics of the kids, even if Sheba wasn’t in the mood. Love the first shot of the kids smiling. Then I guess the “official” look is more stern. Have to agree that Sheba’s best pose was in the last shot.
They pose so formally and put care in to it. I wonder if you have to show the pictures to them all the time from your camera or do they just watch this blog? Or are they not interested in the pictures at all?
Lovely Sheba. I like her last pose.
great photos-love all the vibrant colours
Sheba is pretty no matter what she does. The children were particularly beautiful for these pictures.
Beautiful pictures - Sheba brings some lightness to the serious faces! The child in the white garment in the group shot is so very beautiful. What a smile!
