Posted in August 16th, 2010
by Esther Garvi in Birdwatch Niger, Experiencing Africa, West African Wildlife

On a recent ride in the Zinder bush, close to the aid field, I stumbled upon a large bird of prey. He sat in full solitude, as if he had no worries in the world, looking out over the huge expanse of untouched land.

I decided to take my chances and ride up to him, while [...]

Anette’s Bird Rescue

Posted in May 29th, 2010
by Esther Garvi in Birdwatch Niger, Ishtar's ark

Anette found this little guy trapped in a bucket. She picked it up, showed it for me (for some image documentation!) and then released him back in the tree. He was bit shocked but recovered quickly and went on to meet new adventures. Wasn’t he a beauty?

The Sky of the Red Billed Hornbill

Posted in January 21st, 2010
by Esther Garvi in Birdwatch Niger, Experiencing Africa, Skywatch Africa, West African Wildlife

The red billed hornbill leads a fascinating life.

Enjoying the deep blue Nigerien sky, he looks first to his left,

…then to his right. All is well and life goes on as usual.

Nature’s Little Treasures

Posted in November 14th, 2009
by Esther Garvi in Birdwatch Niger

As were were out riding in the bush, we passed these lovely red bird nests hanging from the tree.

Shaped like perfect onions and of a red colour, they were different from those I normally notice. I had to ride up to them for a  closer view.

Just as I was taking pictures,

…the birds came back to [...]

Birdwatching in Niger!

Posted in November 2nd, 2009
by Esther Garvi in Birdwatch Niger, Experiencing Africa, Personal, RR as in Rhodesian Ridgeback, Things you want to know about Niger, West African Wildlife

The Zinder bush is a great place to go birdwatching. Niger has more than 500 bird species coming through (many of them seasonal) and this is the time of the year to see them.

This past Saturday, we went on a 3 hour long ride (a nice way to celebrate my birthday!). Amidst all of our [...]

The rains have ended, but the Zinder bush still sports a green coat.

The seasonal lakes are filled with water, but these will dry during the months to come.

As you all know, the Zinder bush is one of my favourite places on earth,

..and best enjoyed on horseback!

This time a year is great for bird watching, for [...]
