The red billed hornbill leads a fascinating life.

Welcome to the waterhole of Dadin Serki.

Sheba, the Rhodesian ridgeback from Sweden, is developing her hunting skills.

As the launch is the objective,

the alarmed birds need not fear.

Sheba is only working on her skill of running through water.

Posted in November 30th, 2009
by Esther Garvi in Azawakh hounds, Experiencing Africa, Things you want to know about Niger, West African Wildlife

While out riding in the bush, we sometimes encounter local hunting parties.

These constitute of a number of hunters men and their well-trained Azawakh dogs.

This past Saturday, we went on a 3 hour long ride (a nice way to celebrate my birthday!). Amidst all of our [...]

Our Rhodesian ridgeback Sheba hates toads. She put one in her mouth when she was quite young, and I have never seen her spit for so long afterwards!

They do make great photo objects though. And when the rain water has run off, they hop into the dogs’ water bowls. Smart little [...]

Wildlife at the Doorstep - Our Housecat the Genet

Posted in June 2nd, 2009
by Esther Garvi in Experiencing Africa, West African Wildlife

I woke up the other morning to a crow that wouldn’t stop calling out. I couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about, until I went outdoors, and saw the crow together with another animal, that at first sight looked like a lost guinea fowl which the crow intended to eat.

On closer inspection, the “other” [...]
