Ishtar’s Ark welcomes newborn Allis yar’Amadeus to the world!

Posted in October 14th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Friends & family, Ishtar's ark, Nigerien Goats

Yesterday evening, Ali met up with us at the office to tell us that Esmeralda had given birth. Finally! After a year of waiting, we thought the day would never come!

The little newcomer was the sweetest little female kid (yay for that as we will no longer be keeping male goats at Ishtar’s Ark!)

Anette already [...]

Goodbye, Amadeus

Posted in September 26th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Ishtar's ark

It’s been coming for quite some time, but we recently made the decision to let one of our pets go. Believe it or not, it wasn’t Dennis Mugu (the dog who killed the cat)!

No, it was Amadeus the Goat who had to go the other day. When we first got him, he was the [...]

Is Amadeus Akuya expendable?

Posted in July 28th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Ishtar's ark

Sometimes, when Amadeus the goat frustrates me too much, I think of sending him to the market and exchanging him for someone more… grateful.

Perhaps someone like this one…? (and yes, that is Munir doing his homework in the background…)

But then I look at Amadeus again and his endless silliness sort of charms me, although he [...]

Daily goat activity

Posted in July 7th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Ishtar's ark

From what I can make of it, daily goat activity seem to focus entirely on eating food, waiting for food, fighting over food and then eating some more…

Maybe these two are in for some couple’s therapy soon? After all, junior’s due shortly!

Enjoying the weekend at Ishtar’s Ark

Posted in May 26th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Friends & family, Ishtar's ark, Life as a volunteer

I had a great weekend, having two long rides in the bush (unfortunately, the last one ended up with my borrowing my horse and Arwen getting limp again, so I may not be out for a ride in while…) and catching up on some much needed sleep.

On Friday evening, Tabita came on and stayed the [...]

Enjoying a good Sunday rain

Posted in May 20th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Experiencing Africa, Ishtar's ark, Life as a volunteer

So on Sunday afternoon, we had another shower of rain, thunder and hail (!) - you should have heard the sound it made on my metal roof!

It lasted for about half an hour (I think we had about 4 mm of rain but I have yet to check for sure). I think of all the [...]

Separation anxiety

Posted in December 5th, 2007
by Esther Garvi in Ishtar's ark

Our horses have separation anxiety. They have only known each other for a year, but from the first week, Sahara has gone nuts whenever Arwen is away.
The big change this year is that Arwen now reacts with equal frustration. The disadvantages are (obviously) many, but there are surprisingly many perks as well. For instance, when [...]

Latest Ishtar expansion

Posted in November 14th, 2007
by Esther Garvi in Ishtar's ark

Meet Amadeus & Esmeralda, our newcomers.
Young three month old goat kids, straight from the market! Ali bought them for us, and as always, I ordered by colour…
Esmeralda is a “chèvre rousse”…
…while Amadeus seems to be a mix between “la chèvre de Sahel” and the “chèvre rousse”. He was supposed to be all black, but the [...]
