Animal interaction

Posted in April 5th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Ishtar's ark

Two weeks ago, just after my return to Niger, Anette and I took our two mares Arwen and Sahara to see the third member of their flock: Sahara’s younger sister Maya who now stays with another expat family only a block away.

Maya was happy to see us again and made sure as usual to plant […]

My housemate is leaving

Posted in March 29th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in friends & family

I can’t believe it’s already time for Anette to go back to Sweden again…

Time has gone by so fast! I can’t believe it’s already been seven months since we moved into our house and started piecing things together?

She’ll be leaving strategically in time for before the warm season has reached its slightly uncomfortable heat peak. […]

Waking up in Niger

Posted in March 22nd, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Ishtar's ark

Saturday morning means a long sleep-in, a cosy breakfast (including a latte and an Nigerien orange or grapefruit!) and then the tour of the house and garden to see if anything has changed…

Are the basil plants still alive..?

Will Anette’s latest coat of paint keep the water in our mini pool from leaking out?

Have the mares […]

In November, Anette & I got to know some people from Nigeria at the race track, introduced by our mutual friend, the Snowman. They were really nice people whom we really enjoyed talking to.
This weekend, they were back in town and came to visit, which was a lot of fun! We talked about everything from […]

We had planned this weekend to take Haruna to the race track, but when Saturday arrived, the races had been moved to Dogo. Seeing we were up for a little adventure, we decided to hit the roads (and what bad roads it was!) and go to Dogo and show Haruna some of the typical Nigerien […]

Making friends at the race track

Posted in November 18th, 2007
by Esther Garvi in experiencing Africa, horse racing in Niger

Yesterday afternoon when Anette and I passed by the track to take our girls for a round, we discovered that this weekend held an ambitious program at the Zinder track and that there were quite a few important guests there. On Saturday, we met with the governor of a large Nigerian state, and on Sunday, […]

Latest Ishtar expansion

Posted in November 14th, 2007
by Esther Garvi in Ishtar's ark

Meet Amadeus & Esmeralda, our newcomers.
Young three month old goat kids, straight from the market! Ali bought them for us, and as always, I ordered by colour…
Esmeralda is a “chèvre rousse”…
…while Amadeus seems to be a mix between “la chèvre de Sahel” and the “chèvre rousse”. He was supposed to be all black, but the […]

Since it was Ramadan, there were a few races at the track (nothing big). Anette and I deciding to bring out the girls and let them parade the new racing saddle I bought with me in Sweden.
Arwen was first to go, and loved every inch of the track (as usual).
The biggest change this year was […]

This season’s first journey to the field station

Posted in September 4th, 2007
by Esther Garvi in Eden's work in Tanout, Favourite posts, Niger cool places, values, working as a volunteer

After just one day at the Eden office in Zinder, Anette and I joined forces with the rest of the team and headed up for a full day in the sun at the field station!
Although it’s green and the grass hasn’t dried yet, one still had to watch one’s step for cram-cram!
Now after a full […]
