When Andersson became Hultgren

Posted in November 13th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Experiencing Scandinavia, Friends & family, Swedish culture & traditions

On this day, two months ago, I arrived by boat on a cosy little island on the Swedish West Coast called Donsö. Donsö is fairly similar to Smögen, where my mother grew up - just a little bigger and free from traffic (no cars are allowed on this island and the only way to get […]

An excursion to Rättvik

Posted in September 17th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Experiencing Scandinavia, Friends & family, Ishtar travels

My time in Sweden is almost up: we fly back to Niger on Monday! Five weeks have gone of which one full week went to a lovely vacation in Dalarna, visiting Hanna.

One of the last excursions Hanna had planned was the Långbrygga in Rättvik, overlooking the beautiful Siljan Lake.

Rättvik is a worldwide-known small town because […]

I am off to Karin’s wedding today, in the very dress that Ringo made. As I know you will be eager to see some pictures, I will leave you with images from the Bachelorette Party (in Swedish called a ‘Möhippa’) that was held a few weeks ago.

The morning started with Hanna and I kidnapping a […]

Looking out on Falun City

Posted in September 6th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Experiencing Scandinavia, Friends & family

On our last day in Falun, Hanna took me up to Lugnet (which literally means “Calmness” in Swedish).
Lugnet is a large sport complex located in Falun, Sweden. 58 of the Swedish Sports Confederation’s 67 special sports can be practiced there. There are 6 full sized indoor pitches in the area where everything from dance to […]

The view from Vidaberg

Posted in September 3rd, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Experiencing Scandinavia, Friends & family, Ishtar travels

My week in Dalarna was a wonderful break from everyday things and also a unique chance to experience a little more of Sweden than I normally do. After a hectic season in Niger, spending quality time in the forest and looking out over the lakes was just what I wanted.

One of our excursions was to […]

Discovering Dalarna

by Esther Garvi in Experiencing Scandinavia, Friends & family

And so the other day, Hanna took me on a true ‘Discover Dalarna’ excursion. With so much forest and so many lakes, the scenery was beautiful!

In an earlier comment, Joy mentioned something about being able to be a good tourist in your own country, but in this part of the country, so far from where […]

The Falu Copper Mine - a world heritage site

Posted in August 19th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Experiencing Scandinavia, Favourite posts

On Sunday, Hanna and I wanted to venture down the Falu Mine on a guided tour. We were joined by Rachelle from the Cayman Islands; a relative of Hanna who was in Stockholm for the weekend to attend a wedding and who came to Falun for the day. Having never been down a mine before, […]

Going to Falun

Posted in August 18th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Experiencing Scandinavia

After just a few days in Sweden, I went with north my good friend Hanna to the city of Falun (situated well into the country) where she’s been studying for the past few years.

We were lucky because her grandmother needed someone to drive up her car, so we didn’t have to take the bus.

Me and […]

Longing for Niger

Posted in March 18th, 2008
by Esther Garvi in Friends & family, Life as a volunteer

Life is full of mixed emotions. On one hand, I am thrilled to be going back to Niger. It is a wish come true, to be able to - for the first time in many years - experience the entire rainy season, which is so immensely beautiful in a country that stands barren and dry […]
