Our Nigerien doe Esmeralda with newborn Allis (October 2008)
Ever since we sent away Allis’ father Amadeus to the market, Anette and I had been talking about borrowing a buck for a a couple of weeks, in order to have a new goat baby (or two!) in Autumn. Although neither of us are particularly fond of goat milk (Goatgirl put it very well when she described goat milk as tasting… uhm… “goat”, which is just it!), Sheba ADORES it and as we all know, Anette is in love with all things little and I must admit, there are few things sweeter than baby goats.
First goat male to visit Ishtar’s Ark was Rudolf, the prettiest buck on Eden Street.
Unfortunately, he was a little small (although the same age as our Allis), but that did not stop him from knowing exactly what he was supposed to do.
The only problem was that The Ishtar Goat Ladies were NOT into any reproduction games.
And poor Rudolf did not have the strength to fight our dominant doe Esmeralda.
Even the black princess turned against him, showing him her contempt to any ideas he might have in mind.
Poor Rudolf was distraught, and only an hour after his newly aquired freedom at Isthar’s Ark, he climbed up on the closest to a hilltop he could find and cried his heart out.
It didn’t help that he got to meet big terrifying brown beasts for the first time in his life.
Even Esmeralda couldn’t keep those in check!
He did know what horse food was all about though, and jumped aboard one of those rocking food boats.
Eventually, Princess Allis got a little more tolerant towards him, and the two became friends.
He was even allowed to eat in the presence of the two royal highnesses.
Unfortunately, friends was all that they were to remain, so after a few days of making sure Esmeralda did not harm the poor youth, we sent him back to be happily reunited with his mother, brothers and a dozen cousins of different sorts.
In his place, Ali brought a much bigger buck which we named Ralf, but that’s another story…

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackO wow! What a story! Rudolf is quite a goat! Loved this!
Hmmm, do you think you might be sent a bill for goat therapy after this?
Hilarious! Why is he so small? Is he still very young or is that just his size? Funny pics!

Poor little guy! He came into the situation all full of himself and ready to go and the ladies just wouldn’t have it! The pictures are great! They really illustrate the story!
Poor Rudolf, being treated with contempt for his small size and his youth…Give him a year of two and Esmerelda and maybe even Allis will be entranced

…a year or two…

Isný it all a matter of muscle and size? Poor little chap being cold shouldered like that when he was so willing.
Friday Ark #243…
We’ll post links to sites that have Friday (plus or minus a few days) photos of their chosen animals (photoshops at our discretion and humans only in supporting roles). Watch the Exception category for rocks, beer, coffee cups, and….? Visit all the …
Great post. We are so far removed from this type of thing in our urban setting. Goat milk, no! but I do like goat cheese. In Mexico my family buys cajeta which is sweetened condensed goat/cow’s milk. I am not crazy about that either as it too tastes ‘goat’.
I love Rudolph! Actually I love them all! Great story and great pictures!
Oh, he’s so cute! Bummer the relationship wasn’t taken to the next level. Better luck with the next one.
I’ve never had goat’s milk. I like goat’s cheese well enough!
What a good little story about life. C’est la vie so to speak. I’m sure he will be the king after some experience. Thanks for the story, and have fine day!
Goats are funny.
Well, maybe King Ralf will get the job done…:-)
Poor Rudolph.
I would have cried my heart out too after all that rejection.
What a great post. I really enjoyed this and the photos. He looks so small compared to the horses.
Oh, that is such an interesting and lovely story! Poor Rudolf! Hope he has more luck with the ladies somewhere else!
